Avena: a basic recipe

Classic dominican-style oatmeal the way my dad makes it with some minor changes:

  • Water
  • 1/2 cup steel-cut oats or old fashioned oatmeal
  • 1-2 cups milk
  • 3tsp sugar
  • 1 stick of cinnamon
  • Ground cloves (opt)

Cook oatmeal as directed, strain and give the oats a quick rinse with cold water to prevent clumping. Return oatmeal to pot, add milk, sugar, cinnamon stick and cloves and heat to a low simmer. All done đŸ™‚ The result? A thicker, richer version of oatmeal that’s just a little bit sweet and as comforting as hot chocolate on a cold morning.
